Hoot at Hunger in Ghana
If you thought the U.S. had the market cornered on Thanksgiving, think again! There are more than a dozen nations that observe their own versions, including the West African nation of Ghana. The Ga celebrate Homowo, which roughly translates to “hooting at hunger.” The month-long festival pays tribute to their survival through famine centuries ago. As such, it's a celebration of the harvest, and like our own Thanksgiving, centers around food. But rather than turkey, the Ga people enjoy kpoikpoi, a traditional dish of maize and palm oil that’s served with abenkwan (palm nut soup), as well as tsile (red snapper), which is typically smoked and dried.
