Appetizer Party: Single-Serve Sensations
Summer is in high gear and with COVID-19 vaccination rates continuing to rise, many of us are planning larger gatherings with a bit more of a party vibe — even if it stays in the backyard. Which begs the question: What food do we serve? Naturally, a summer party brings to mind all-things-grilled and seasonal goodies like fresh corn on the cob and juicy watermelon. But for a relaxed outdoor get-together with a little panache, we think nothing quite fits the bill like a variety of bite-sized appetizers for guests to nibble on as they chat through the evening.
Culinary historians believe the humble appetizer got its start back in Ancient Greece and Rome, where guests would socialize while noshing on small pieces of fruit, cured meat, cheese, fish, and olives — not unlike a modern-day charcuterie board. The tradition persisted through the Renaissance, during which time physicians believed that eating small morsels of cured meats would prepare the digestive system before the main meal.
In the United States today, appetizers are a popular nosh during happy hours and other social occasions, and come in just about every form. But for a backyard event, we suggest an array of finger foods that eliminate the need for utensils and keep cleanup simple.
Stuffed, Wrapped & Rolled
This category is all about foods inside other foods. Think blue cheese-stuffed dates, prosciutto-wrapped asparagus, and lettuce wraps stuffed with turkey and avocado.
Picked & Sticked
Is an ingredient too wet to be a finger food, or meant to be dipped into a special sauce? Put it on a toothpick or skewer! Try it with caprese kabobs (alternate cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella & basil), mixed berry skewers served with mint-infused yogurt, or mini meatballs.
“Chips” & Dips
We use the word “chips” loosely here because dip goes with just about anything crunchy. Try crispy snap peas with our member favorite Savory Yogurt Dip, corn chips with guacamole, or go for something a little “extra” with by pairing crispy roasted veggies with your favorite dip.
Canapés
These little bite-sized beauties are stacks of ingredients laid on a flat base, like an open-faced sandwich. Think outside the bread-box for your base, like with cucumber slices topped with smoked salmon and sour cream, or try chicken salad atop roasted sweet potato slices.
